HTPC

Lately I’ve been obsessed with building a HTPC/media server for my house. I know I want to be able to use it to back up my computer via the network and time machine, store all my media as well as my roommates’, and have the option to play it all back in HD on our flatscreen.

My first thought was to go with the Mac Mini because every other computer in the house is a Mac. However, the mini is expensive for what you get, and I’m certainly on a budget. My next thought then, was to go with the Asus EEE box b206. It’s got HDMI, it’s easily upgradable, and maybe most importantly, it’s dirt cheap. The major drawback: no optical drive.

So, I spent a few minutes on newegg.com piecing together something that should work for around $500. As I was writing this I started worrying about NTFS compatability, which could bring all this crashing down around me. What to do, what to do.
